Understanding Domain Availability
Checking whether a name is registered is the simplest possible WHOIS/RDAP question: available or taken, across as many extensions as you want at once.
- Available vs. taken
- "Available" means no registration record was found for that exact domain right now via WHOIS/RDAP. It's a live snapshot, not a reservation - a name shown as available can still be registered by someone else moments later.
- Why check more than one extension
- A name is often taken on .com but free on .io, .dev, or a dozen others. Entering just a name (no extension) checks it across a curated list of popular ones at once, instead of one at a time.
- Extension (TLD)
- The part after the dot - .com, .net, .io, and so on. Some are open to anyone; a few have their own eligibility rules set by the registry that operates them.
- "Couldn't check"
- Shown when this tool couldn't get a reliable answer for that specific extension right now - either no registry lookup service is known for it, or a momentary error occurred. Never guessed as available or taken.
- Already registered?
- Every taken domain links to its full WHOIS record - registrar, registration/expiry dates, and name servers.
Need full ownership detail for a domain you already know is taken? Use Whois.
